Strange Fruits
November 30, 2023 – April 28, 2024
Gallery 109 & Anthony R. Abraham Family Gallery
Curated by Yuneikys Villalonga, Director of Curatorial Programs
This exhibition gathers a selection of recent work by Marielle Plaisir, a multimedia artist based in Miami, Florida. Working across various disciplines, from painting to drawing, to sculpture, to fashion and performance, Plaisir creates intense visual experiences that explore her French-Caribbean heritage against the backdrop of Postcolonialism. She addresses prejudice through the lens of body politics and identifies moments of struggle and social control over the Black body. In her works, she carefully dissects control systems to present us with new, freeing, and empowering realities and counternarratives.
The show will be accompanied by a series of public programs, including talks, and exhibition tours. In April 2024, Plaisir will present new digital artworks and a multimedia piece in collaboration with Miami MoCAAD (Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora), after premiering the new production in Overtown, exploring historical connections between our communities. This project was granted a 2022 Knight New Work Award from the Knight Foundation.
