Julio Larraz: The Kingdom We Carry Inside

Julio Larraz (b. Havana, Cuba, 1944) is one of the most influential figures in Latin American art today. Throughout a career of six decades, institutional recognition has gone hand in hand with the admiration and following of colleagues and younger artists from all over the world that praise his mastery of technique, color, and light, and the poetry and the subtlety of his work.

The exhibition Julio Larraz; The Kingdom We Carry Inside brings to the public eye an important selection of works from private and public collections, as well as the artist’s and the Julio Larraz Foundation’s archives, in an effort to represent all mediums and key periods of his life and oeuvre. The works on view at Gallery 109, the Anthony R. Abraham Family Gallery, Carole A. Fewell Gallery, and Frank Lynn Gallery span from his early days in New York, as a caricaturist for major newspapers and magazines, to the drawings, paintings, and sculptures made in New Mexico, Paris, Florence, and in Miami, where the artist currently lives and works. Throughout the show, biographical annotations, in chronological order, dialogue with works grouped after themes, characters, and narratives that are recurrent in Larraz’s work and bring us closer to his creative process.

In a joint effort between the Julio Larraz Foundation and The Coral Gables Museum, Julio Larraz: The Kingdom We Carry Inside will be presented at the Coral Gables Museum in Miami from December 1st, 2021 through April 30th, 2022, and is expected to travel to other renowned institutions in the country. The show is curated by Coral Gables Museum’s Chief Curator, Yuneikys Villalonga.
