Drawing from Coral Gables: The Making of a Manual
October 13 , 2022 – November 16, 2022
The Galeras Gallery
This exhibition gathers study drawings of local landmarks: Granada Plaza, the Venetian Pool, the Merrick House, Biltmore Country Club (now part of the Biltmore Hotel), City Hall, and Coral Gables Medical Building (now Books and Books). These were some early buildings in Coral Gables designed in the Classical and Mediterranean Revival styles. The Mediterranean Revival style is based on the architecture of Spain, the Italian Riviera, Northern Africa, and Venice. First-year architecture students from the University of Miami made these drawings in 2012-2017 and captured details of the style for the architects of today. These drawings can also inspire the built environment of Coral Gables in the future.
The exhibition consists of a selection of drawings from the new and expanded manual of Mediterranean architecture of Coral Gables. The show will also be accompanied by a lecture series. It is curated by Teofilo Victoria, Institute of Classical Architecture and Art and University of Miami School of Architecture faculty and Christina Chiang, the Curator of Architecture and Urbanism at the Coral Gables Museum.
