Peruvian Beauty

The Photographic Work of Yayo López

Peruvian Beauty gathers over twenty-five portraits by Peruvian photographer Yayo López. Throughout his career, Lopez has traveled all over his country capturing female faces that, in one way or another, have attracted his attention -women of diverse ages and from different social and geographical backgrounds. He is very interested in the intrinsic concepts of beauty that determine how Peruvians perceive and value themselves, and that provides a very plural image of the identity of that nation.

Presented in different venues in Peru, and internationally, this exhibition has become a reference for documentary photography in that country as it represents the rich ethnic and cultural diversity of Peruvian people.

“We have grown up in a racist and alienated society; in a country with imported models of beauty where the woman’s body is seen as an object. This phenomenon affects women’s self-esteem and creates a climate that favors violence against them.” says the artist.

Yayo López (Lima, 1965) is a photographer, journalist, visual artist and communicator. He studied Communication Sciences at the University of Lima, Photography in Buenos Aires and Photo-Journalism at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

This exhibition is created in collaboration with the Consulate General of Peru in Miami.
