Architectural photography has its roots in the work of the late-17th-century, 18th-century and early-19th-century viewpainters and engravers. For them, architecture was their primary focus. Most concentrated their work in one city. My work follows in the artistic traditions of those and other viewpainters.
For over the past four decades I have been documenting the historic architecture and neighborhoods that form a significant part of the cultural heritage of my city, Miami, and specifically, Coral Gables. Phineas Paist’s work has been a primary focus of my photographs in The City Beautiful, which speaks to his enormous architectural impact in the city after almost a century.
About the photographer
Steven Brooke is an internationally renowned photographer of architecture, landscape, and interiors. Steven Brooke grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and moved to the city to study at the University of Miami. He began his architectural photography career in 1979. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Rome Prize and the AIA National Honor Award for Photography. He has been on the faculty of the University of Miami School of Architecture for over 12 years. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally; and, in 2022, he was invited as one of the 50 leading photographers in the world to exhibit and speak at XPOSURE 2022, the international photography festival held in Sharjah, UAE. Steven has photographed over 40 books on architecture and design, 10 of which he has also written. These include landmark books on Miami Beach Art Deco District where he was on the front lines in the original battle to save the district. His highly acclaimed books on Rome and Jerusalem were the first of their kind in decades. Steven has been based in Miami for his entire career. His books and hundreds of magazine articles on Florida architecture and design have promoted Florida architecture and preservation throughout the world.
